Pre-Procedure:
How long is the procedure?
The actual procedure takes 20-30 minutes.
Will the procedure be painful?
There may be minor discomfort during the procedure due to the doctor introducing air into the colon. However, if during the procedure you do experience some discomfort, the doctor will order more medication.
Will I be asleep during the procedure?
Not exactly, while some people do fall asleep, you are under conscious sedation. Therefore, you are breathing on your own and can respond to directions. However, when the procedure is over most patients will not remember the procedure.
What time can the patient be picked up?
Approx 1hr and 15 minutes after the scheduled procedure time.
Post-Procedure:
When and what can I eat?
You can eat anything, anytime from now on.
Do I receive the results of the test?
The test results and consultation letter are sent to your family doctor’s office where he will explain the results. If the doctor’s find something the GI will set up a follow-up appointment with you.
When can I drive?
The next day/tomorrow.
What causes the polyps to develop?
Generally it is multi-factorial: genetics, lack of fiber (bran), obesity, and age (as we age).
Can the polyps reoccur?
Yes.
